Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (July 6, 2021) – A solid night resulted in a top-five finish in the 360ci sprint car feature for Kaleb Johnson last Saturday night at Knoxville Raceway.

“I thought we had a pretty good night,” said Johnson, whose evening culminated in a fifth-place feature run. “I was a little disappointed with the way our feature ended. I felt we had a top-three car and we would’ve finished there if it hadn’t been for a caution with two laps to go. But we’ll take a top five and move forward.”

Johnson’s evening got off to a good start when he qualified fourth quickest out of 25 drivers at the half-mile oval.

“We went out kind of late in qualifying (17th) so we were pretty happy with our time,” he said. “We tried a couple different things which we hope can help us in the next few weeks there. We’re always working at trying to improve our qualifying at Knoxville since it plays such a big part in the rest of your night.”

Johnson’s qualifying effort placed him fifth in a heat race behind some stout drivers.

“It was difficult to pass in the heat race because the track still had quite a bit of moisture,” he said. “I ran fifth the entire race. I could get close to Ryan Giles and Cory Eliason, but I didn’t have enough momentum to pass them.”

The feature inversion worked in Johnson’s favor as he started second in the main event.

“I ran second most of the race before I had a good battle with Cory Eliason for a couple of laps and he got by me,” he said. “I stayed about five to six car lengths back of him as we raced through traffic until there was a caution with two laps to go. On the restart, I drove into the bottom of turns one and two a little too hard and slipped up the track a bit, which allowed a couple of cars to get by me exiting turn two.

“I’m pretty sure we would’ve finished third without the caution. But that happens when you race against the level of competition that Knoxville has.”

Johnson will take this weekend off from racing since his class will not compete at Knoxville Raceway. He plans to race the following weekend with the Midwest Power Series and Midwest Sprint Touring Series on July 16 at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn., before returning to Knoxville Raceway on July 17.
