Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (May 3, 2021) – Kaleb Johnson showed improvement throughout the night en route to a top-10 result in the 360ci sprint car A Main on Saturday evening at Knoxville Raceway.

“Our night went all right,” he said. “We just needed to qualify better. I was hoping there would be at least one caution in the feature, but that never happened. But our night ended on a decent note.”

Johnson timed with the final trio of cars in qualifying for the second consecutive week.

“I think the track faded a little bit from the first group, but it wasn’t too bad,” he said. “I wasn’t thrilled about being 13th quickest (out of 24 cars). But I was on the track at the same time as Jamie Ball and Matt Moro. We all had about the same lap times, so I didn’t feel quite so bad since they have so much experience there and usually qualify well.”

The six-car inversion for the heat race placed Johnson on the outside of the front row.

“I got a pretty good start and took the lead going into turn one and held it for the rest of the race,” he said. “It makes a big difference when you’re in front and have clean air.”

Johnson rolled off in the 11th starting position for the 24-car main event.

“I couldn’t do much the first few laps,” he said. “I had cars all around me and had to wait a bit before I had room to start passing some. I think I dropped back a bit to around 13th. Then I got to rolling the top pretty well and started moving forward. I got to ninth behind Gunner Ramey, but I didn’t stay in the gas enough going into turn one and bounced it off the wall letting Jamie underneath me. I gathered it up and eventually got past Ramey and then I was able to sneak by Calvin Landis in the final corner for eighth.

“I think a caution would’ve help us move up a bit more. It makes it tougher when you start further back and don’t get a caution because the field can get strung out. But all in all it was a decent night. We tried some different things with shocks and were happy with the results. We think that will help us going forward.”

Johnson will return to competition this Saturday at Knoxville Raceway.
