Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (April 19, 2021) – A consistent evening on the track culminated in a top five A Main finish for Kaleb Johnson during the Knoxville Raceway season opener Saturday night.

“Our night went pretty well,” said Johnson, whose effort equaled his career-best finish at the track. “It’s easy to watch the race afterwards and see what you did wrong. I felt our car was better than a fifth-place car, but we’ll take a top five.”

Johnson’s night got off to a solid start when he qualified third quickest out of 27 drivers.

“I think it helped to go out early in qualifying,” he said. “I was able to stick the bottom pretty well. I actually rode the berm a little too much on my second lap, which ended up being my better lap. We tried something different for qualifying and it seemed to work. We think it’s something that will help us the rest of the season.”

The inversion slotted Johnson into the sixth starting spot in his heat race.

“I was able to get a decent start and pass a couple of cars right away,” he said. “I closed on Joe Beaver for third, but didn’t pass him and finished fourth. But we moved forward in the race and made the inversion for the feature so that was good.”

Johnson lined up third for the start of the A Main.

“I ran in third early in the race until we had a caution,” he said. “I made a mistake on the restart. I didn’t want to follow Lee Grosz into the first turn because I figured it would make my car tight. I ended up in the middle of the track and that let Clint Garner get by me. I made another mistake later in the race and that was when Jason Martin passed me for fourth and I ended up finishing fifth.

“It wasn’t a terrible race, although you never like going backwards. But to start the season with a top five at Knoxville is nothing to be ashamed of, especially considering the experience of the guys finishing in front of us.”

Johnson hopes to build on his opening night performance when he returns to Knoxville Raceway this Saturday.

“This helps our confidence going forward, especially regarding qualifying,” he said. “I just have to concentrate on eliminating mistakes like the ones I made in the feature.”
