Inside Line Promotions – OSKALOOSA, Iowa (Aug. 12, 2020) – Jordon Mallett advanced six positions on Sunday night at Southern Iowa Speedway to finish 18th during the Sage Fruit Ultimate Challenge presented by Searsboro Telephone Co.

The performance wrapped up a frustrating trip to Iowa that saw his outing at the 30th annual My Place Hotels 360 Knoxville Nationals presented by Great Southern Bank end in the D Main Saturday night at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville.

“We rolled into Knoxville as prepared as we’ve ever been, but we just had absolutely no luck,” he said. “The spark box broke before we even took a competitive lap and by the time we got it fixed, the track had slowed down too much to really be able to capitalize on the one lap we got and it pretty much ended our hopes of any success.”

Mallett kicked off the weekend in preliminary action on Friday by timing in 41st quickest among 48 drivers in attendance with a lap of 17.908 seconds. He followed that up by finishing where he started in a heat race – ninth. Mallett won the C Main from the second starting position, but his quest to make the feature stalled out in the B Main as he finished 18th.

“Qualifying is so important and the issues we had just really ruined our whole night and the whole weekend to be honest,” he said. “We went as hard as we could in the C and B Mains, but we were so far back that it was going to take a miracle to really get anywhere.”

Mallett returned to Knoxville Raceway on Saturday night and he raced his way through the E Main by finishing fourth. He then advanced five positions in the D Main to place 14th.

“We didn’t do ourselves any favors on our preliminary night and we knew we were in for a long road if we wanted to get in the show,” he said. “If anything, we got to try some stuff out on the car and make some changes so I guess we’ll chalk it up to a learning experience.”

Looking to finish off the trip to Iowa on a higher note, Mallett headed to Southern Iowa Speedway to race with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour in the Ultimate Challenge on Sunday night.

Mallett finished where he started in a heat race – ninth – before advancing four positions in a B Main to finish eighth. He opted to take a series provisional to tag the rear of the field in the A Main and he charged forward from 24th to 18th. The six positions gained were the second most among the drivers in the feature and the top-20 run was the 17th of the season for the Greenbrier, Ark., native.

“We had a tough draw early in the night and the track was really narrow early on,” he said. “We really just had no luck in Iowa. We played the best hand we could with the cards we were dealt and salvaged a decent night in the feature. It’s a weekend that I’m ready to put in the rearview. I was never so glad to be leaving Iowa.”
