Sams III Earns Career-Best ASCS National Tour Finish at U.S. 36 Raceway
Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (July 20, 2020) – Danny Sams III captured his career-best Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour result last Friday at U.S. 36 Raceway.
The Sams LaMountain Racing driver placed third in a heat race and seventh in the main event during his debut at the high-banked oval in Osborn, Mo.
“We started off pretty good,” he said. “In the heat race we went into the first corner and all got bunched together. I ended up on the short end of that stick and we finished third in the heat.
“We got the car to hook up really good in the main event. I was in fifth when a red flag came out so I had to go back two spots because we didn’t complete the lap. It was definitely one of the best nights we’ve had this year. We ran a new frame. I felt like we made a good decision on the shock package, too. I was able to drive the car in a lot deeper and come off a lot harder than my competitors.”
The strong performance moved Sams III up to eighth in the championship standings.
The team ventured to Knoxville Raceway on Saturday.
“The car felt pretty stable in hot laps, but it was super loose in qualifying,” he said. “Come to find out we had a tire issue. That put us way behind in points.”
Sams III battled to overcome the qualifying woes as he advanced from 11th to seventh in a heat race, from seventh to third in the C Main and from 19th to 13th in the B Main.
“The car had a lot more speed each time we hit the track, but we started too far back without enough time to make the main event,” he said. “We definitely made a lot of progress. It was unlike any other track. It took some adapting to get used to, but every time I hit the track I got more comfortable. The car and myself were faster all together by the end of the night.”
Sams III plans on returning to Knoxville Raceway this Saturday to gain more experience.
