Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 26, 2019) – Trey Starks recorded his fifth top 10 of the season at Knoxville Raceway last Saturday during the season finale.

The strong result guided the Gobrecht Motorsports driver to an eighth-place finish in the championship standings as well as the Rookie of the Year Award.

“I think we accomplished what we wanted to,” he said. “It didn’t happen the way we thought it would. A lot of it had to do with rain outs and not getting the amount of races we wanted to. We struggled at times and had our fair share of problems. I’m happy with how the team came together. The logistics were pretty scary with two guys flying in every week, but we didn’t have any major hiccups.”

The team overcame a problem early on Saturday when mechanical woes popped up as the checkered flag was being waved during hot laps.

“We had to change a motor before qualifying and we got that done just in time to get a lap at the end,” he said. “We hadn’t had to do that this year, but everyone did well. For not having any laps on that motor and not knowing what was going on, to end up 12th was pretty solid, especially for only getting one lap. We also didn’t get to make any changes to the setup for how the track was because we were hustling to get the motor changed.”

Starks then maneuvered from third to second in a heat race.

“We ran decent in our heat,” he said. “The car was rolling really good on the bottom. We went to some of the things we did on our Knoxville Nationals prelim night and it seemed to respond. It’s a bummer we’re just ending our season at Knoxville as I feel like we’re hitting our stride.”

Starks ranked 11th in overall points and therefore lined up on the inside of the sixth row for the A Main.

“It started raining pretty good and that changed the track significantly,” he said. “It threw us for a loop a little bit. The bottom was a little soft, which made it harder to run and the middle and top better for at least the first 10 laps. We fell back a couple of spots. I stuck with the bottom all race and picked off a few positions. It got pretty dicey the last lap. We could have ended anywhere from sixth to 11th and we finished ninth.”

The ninth-place result marked his 12th top 10 overall this year.

Starks is scheduled to race this Friday through Sunday at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn., during the 360 Nationals. He ranks fourth in the track’s championship standings – only 12 points out of the lead.
