Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 12, 2019) – Kerry Madsen was victorious during the 59th annual NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores.
The KI Crossbows backed Big Game Motorsports driver captured the Hard Knox Night on Friday to not only post his second triumph of the season at Knoxville Raceway, but also earn a starting position in the 50-lap main event on Saturday.
“I thought we did pretty well,” he said. “Our qualifying night wasn’t what we wanted so then we had to do it the hard way for the Friday night program. We had a great race car and it all went to plan.”
The event started on Wednesday with Madsen qualifying 16th quickest out of more than 50 competitors. He then placed fifth in a heat race before ending the night with a seventh-place outing in the B Main.
“We were in the first heat and the track was heavy,” he said. “We just didn’t make it out of the heat. That’s the crucial part to having a successful Nationals. Then we had to start so deep in the B Main because a lot of (faster qualifiers) didn’t make it through their heat race. That’s someone’s story every Nationals though.”
The team rebounded on Friday by setting quick time in their qualifying group. Madsen then charged from fourth to win a heat race and advance into the second starting position for the main event, which locked the top four finishers into Saturday’s A Main.
“We started out with a really, really good car,” he said. “It’s fun when it goes like that. We got the lead early so then you can really control it.”
Madsen claimed the victory, which lined him up on the inside of the 11th row for Saturday’s finale. It marked his 13th career A Main start and his seventh in a row.
“We went with a similar package from Friday,” he said. “Any time you start from the back you go as hard as you can. You have to get going early. If you struggle back there you can go a lap down. We made good progress. On the restart at the halfway point I got messed up with one car and that cost us three or four spots.”
Madsen finished with an 11th-place run.
“Everyone has pretty high hopes,” he said. “We rebounded from Wednesday pretty well. But at the end of the day a top five or podium is what everyone is looking for.”
