Dominic Scelzi Building Momentum Throughout Iowa Speedweek

Inside Line Promotions – OSKALOOSA, Iowa (Aug. 8, 2019) – Dominic Scelzi has had a fast race car throughout the first half of Iowa Speedweek.
Scelzi has guided his family owned sprint car to numerous strong moments, including top-15 runs at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, and at Southern Iowa Speedway.
It began last Thursday during the opening night of the 29th annual My Place Hotels 360 Knoxville Nationals presented by Great Southern Bank. Scelzi qualified 26th quickest out of 40-plus competitors. A third-place run in a heat race locked him into the main event. Unfortunately, a blown tire and broken nose wing hampered Scelzi and he pulled off the track early with a 23rd-place finish.
That relegated him to the middle of the 90-plus driver field for Saturday’s finale. Scelzi put on a show, rallying from seventh to fourth place in the C Main to transfer into the final starting position in the B Main. He then charged from 24th to eighth, which missed a transfer into the main event by only four positions.
“We had a great car and I was able to maneuver through the field, but at the end of the day the hole we were in from our preliminary night was too big to be able to make the main event,” he said. “However, it was great to be able to pass as many cars as we did and make the progress we did on Saturday.”
Scelzi continued to run well on Sunday during the 8th annual Bell Helmets Capitani Classic presented by Great Southern Bank. He timed in 12th quickest in his group, placed third in a heat race and finished 13th – out of the 77 drivers who started the night – in the A Main.
“It was a good night to get reacclimated to the 410 at Knoxville in preparation for the 410 Nationals,” he said. “When you look at the big picture placing 13th out of 77 drivers is a good showing.”
Scelzi ventured to Southern Iowa Speedway on Monday for the 24th annual Sage Fruit Front Row Challenge presented by Musco Lighting. He qualified eighth quickest out of 30-plus drivers before finishing fourth in a heat race and 12th in the main event.
“We needed to pass a couple more cars in the heat race in order to make the King of the Hill, which would have started us further up front,” he said. “Track position is important everywhere, but especially when you get to the bigger, flat tracks like in Oskaloosa.”
Scelzi is scheduled to return to Knoxville Raceway for the 59th annual NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores, which is this Friday and Saturday.
