Swindell Makes Gains During World of Outlaws Doubleheader at Knoxville

Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (June 17, 2019) – Despite battling an array of problems last weekend during the Brownells Big Guns Bash at Knoxville Raceway, Sammy Swindell and the Thone Motorsports team gained valuable laps and made progress throughout the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series doubleheader.

“I think we made a lot of progress on some things, but we had some things that didn’t go right for us either,” Swindell said. “I thought our car drove a whole lot better. We found a couple of things from the week before. We had a right rear shock on at Mansfield that when a tire blew it took most of the rebound out of it. We also made a couple of small changes with the setup on the car and it was quite a bit better.”

The two-day event began strong for Swindell, who qualified fourth quickest in his group on Friday. A runner-up result in a heat race locked him into the dash. He placed seventh in the dash to line up on the inside of the fourth row for the main event.

“We had an ignition box start to go bad in the dash,” he said. “When the box got put back on it didn’t have the switch lined up in the hole right. When I got in to start it it almost wouldn’t start. We got it going, but it wasn’t down all the way so it turned itself off. I got it going again, but the race officials threw the yellow. I had to go to the back so I pulled into the work area and we got it right. After that I passed five cars the first couple of laps. Then I got to racing with somebody and we almost got put into the fence so I lost most of those spots. Then you’re back in the back and by then the leader is catching us.”

Swindell capped the night with a 19th-place finish.

Rain hampered the event on Saturday, creating a delay followed by a heavy track that limited passing.

“The weather was a lot different,” Swindell said. “It was real humid and the air wasn’t good. We didn’t get the tune-up on the motor quite right. That just killed our night because we didn’t make any speed in qualifying.”

Swindell timed in 16th quickest in his group. He advanced from eighth to sixth in a heat race and from 11th to seventh in the Last Chance Showdown, but narrowly missed transferring into the main event both times.

The team is scheduled to compete with the World of Outlaws this Saturday at Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam., Wis., during the Jim “JB” Boyd Memorial presented by Karavan Trailers. Swindell hasn’t raced at the track since earning a 10th-place result in June 2015.
