Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (June 12, 2019) – Mason Daniel recorded his season-best result on Friday at Lee County Speedway before capturing his career-best 410ci winged sprint car finish at Knoxville Raceway on Saturday during his best weekend of the season.
“The guys have been working hard and I’ve figured out what I like with the car,” he said. “We’ve been to Lee County Speedway in a 360 last year. I think we ran fifth there. I really liked that setup and we put that in the car on Friday. Right off the bat we were really good.”
Daniel, who was making his first career start with the Built Ford Tough MOWA Sprint Car Series at the oval in Donnellson, Iowa, won a heat race after starting third. That locked him into the feature redraw and he started the A Main on the inside of the second row.
“I took the lead twice and led laps,” he said. “(Bill) Balog and I got into a battle around Lap 15. I was holding the lead when a yellow came out and they put me into second. The same thing happened another time and I was put to third. That was frustrating because I had the lead taken from me twice. Late in the race I got to the leader’s bumper, but rubber kicked in and that was all I could do. It was still a good night. It shows all the hard work the guys have been doing.”
Daniel followed his runner-up result with a stellar outing at Knoxville Raceway on Saturday. He qualified fifth quickest and advanced from fifth to fourth place in a heat race. That ranked him eighth in overall points and lined Daniel up on the outside of the fourth row for the main event.
“We took the weekend before off, but the last three or four times we tried to race at Knoxville we got rained out,” he said. “There were some things we’ve wanted to try. It was a step in the right direction.
“Since the World of Outlaws show is this weekend we wanted to know what we could and couldn’t do so we tried some stuff. The car was good. It was a bit tight to get around the bottom. In the middle of the race I made a mistake and tapped the wall down the straightaway. That killed my momentum, but it was a good night and we made progress. We were happy to earn a top 10.”
Daniel battled between seventh and ninth throughout the race before ending with an eighth-place finish.
He is scheduled to compete this Thursday at Eldon Raceway in Eldon, Iowa, with the Sprint Invaders and Friday and Saturday at Knoxville Raceway during the Brownells Big Guns Bash with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series.
