Starks Earns Career-Best Finishes at Jackson and Knoxville

Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (June 10, 2019) – Trey Starks posted career-best results at Jackson Motorplex and at Knoxville Raceway last weekend.

The Gobrecht Motorsports driver kicked off the weekend by garnering a runner-up result on Friday during a Midwest Power Series and Midwest Sprint Touring Series event at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn.

“Things are definitely getting better and as we’re getting races in we’re improving,” he said. “I feel really confident at Jackson. We had a really good car all night. We were really fast in hot laps to the heat to the main. I’m really happy with the results.”

A run from fourth to second in a heat race earned the eighth starting position for the main event. However, Starks didn’t hold that position long as he quickly moved forward. He advanced into the top five before the track began to take rubber.

“I think the rubber hampered us a little,” he said. “I think we were into the top three within the first five laps. The biggest thing that hurt us was not being able to get by (Jack) Dover. He knew where the rubber was. I was trying to work the top before the rubber really came in. The difference maker was a restart and not getting by him because I knew that (Matt) Juhl didn’t quite know the rubber was there, but I knew Dover knew it was there. My focus was to get by him before the rubber took over, but we couldn’t quite get there on the restart. If we could have got him behind us it was a race we could have won.”

Starks made a last-lap pass on Juhl for the second-place finish, which also tied his season-best outing.

He continued to run strong the following night at Knoxville Raceway. Starks timed in third quickest and he gained a position in a heat race to finish fifth. That ranked him sixth in overall points and lined him up on the outside of the third row for the main event.

“Every time we hit the track we’re improving and we still have a lot of room to improve,” he said. “We’re definitely building with the race car every time we go there. I felt like we had another good qualifying effort and a solid heat. I found some speed on the bottom the last three laps. Then in the feature I made a couple of mistakes, but the car was closer and we were competitive.”

The seventh-place result was Starks’ best 410ci sprint car finish at the track. It also moved him to ninth in the championship standings.

Starks will return to the half-mile oval this Friday and Saturday for the Brownells Big Guns Bash with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series.

“It’s the same song and dance,” he said. “We have to qualify well to put ourselves in contention for the rest of the night. The track has been pretty slick for us the last few weeks. I think they’ll have a little more water in it because more cars are coming, but I think the experience we have this year will help us. First thing is first, we have to qualify well.”
