Bryan Hulbert – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (August 15, 2018) Wayne Johnson’s run through the 2018 Southern Iowa Sprint Week was a roller coaster ride with an up and down weekend in the Knoxville 360 Nationals presented by Great Southern Bank clouded further by a rough outing in the 5-hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals.

“I wasn’t very happy with our Knoxville Nationals at all. I’d say we earned about a ‘C’; if that. Our 360cid program was pretty good at Knoxville and at Osky. I thought we had a shot at winning that race. Got up there quick and had a tire blister so we ended up backing up.”

Tenth in Knoxville 360 Nationals preliminary action, Wayne locked his Outlaw Wings No. 2c into Saturday’s $15,000 to win A-Feature. Starting 12th, Johnson was up to eighth in the first couple laps, but a trip into the work area on an open red would yield negative results.

“We had a really good start on the feature and got up to eighth almost immediately. We had that red for Jamie and when they put us down into the infield, I had the boys get under the hood and switch on the crank trigger, and when I pushed back off, it wasn’t right and about two laps later, it just shut off and I knew the trigger screwed up. We got back to the work area, and they switched it off, and it fired right back up,” explained Wayne who returned for a couple laps before having to roll into the Pits for good.

Returning Sunday for the Weld Wheels Capitani Classic, Wayne timed in 23rd but with something amiss, the team opted to park for the night. Rolling into the Sage Fruit Ultimate Challenge on Tuesday, Wayne made it as high as third before slipping back in the closing laps due to the aforementioned tire issue.

Making his qualifying attempt for the 5-hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores on Thursday, time trials was good enough for 35th overall. Salvaging points with a runner-up finish in the Heat Race, Wayne had great speed in the A-Feature with a run from 18th to 12th.

“We raced really good, and had plenty of speed, we just needed to qualify better. We came back on Friday and it just comes down that your entire Knoxville Nationals is determined by one lap, and we were 27th quick in our group so we decided to run the Heat Race just to see what we could do and we just weren’t good at all so we parked it after that. I just felt like it was going to cost us more than we could possibly make at that point.”

Looking to get some pep in their step, the Two-C Racing Team will be in action this weekend with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by Sawblade.com at Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City, Iowa on Saturday, August 18 and Missouri State Fair Speedway in Sedalia, Mo. on Sunday, August 19.
