Starks Learns During Busy Knoxville Nationals

Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 13, 2018) – It takes near perfection to be successful during the famed Knoxville Nationals, which Trey Starks learned last year when he made the A Main on the final night for the first time in his career.

Unfortunately, last weekend wasn’t a perfect one for Starks and Gobrecht Motorsports, which tackled the 58th annual 5-Hour Energy Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores at Knoxville Raceway.

The action began on Thursday when Starks qualified seventh quickest overall. However, an eighth-place finish in a heat race relegated him to the B Main. Starks was in contention early to garner a transfer position into the main event until a mechanical failure sidelined the team.

“We had really good speed, but just didn’t make it through the heat and had bad luck in the B Main,” he said.

Starks returned to the half-mile oval on Friday. He timed in ninth quickest in his group and placed third in a heat race to lock into the 12th starting position for the A Main.

“We just didn’t quite have the speed we needed in the feature,” he said. “We have to work on some things to get a little bit faster. We were just off and needed to be better at the end of the night and we just didn’t quite have it.”

Starks held on for an 18th-place finish. That lined him up third in the C Main on Saturday. He finished fifth and was awarded the final transfer position into the back of the B Main. Starks gained a couple of positions before ending 22nd.

“We need to get a little faster when it counts,” he said. “I think we learn every time we come here. It’s a little disappointing because we made the show last year, but that’s a hard thing to do. We ended in the B Main this year, which isn’t anything to hang our heads about.”

The team tentatively plans on competing with the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions this Friday at Utica-Rome Speedway in Utica, N.Y.; Saturday at Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, N.Y.; and Sunday at Lebanon Valley Speedway in West Lebanon, N.Y.
