Inside Line Promotions – WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (July 31, 2018) – Last weekend got off to a bumpy start for Kevin Swindell Racing, which rebounded in a big way on Saturday at Knoxville Raceway during the team’s final tune-up before the Knoxville Nationals.

The Swindell Speed Lab backed team endured mechanical problems during qualifying on Friday at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn., where they scratched before turning a competitive lap during the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions show.

The backup engine was put in the sprint car for Saturday’s All Star show at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa.

“We were worried because that’s the motor we don’t consider to be strong for tracks of that size,” Swindell said. “To qualify like we did in the group we had and ninth overall from all those cars was great.”

Spencer Bayston piloted the race car to the fourth quickest lap in group qualifying before finishing second in a heat race, which earned a spot into a dash. A fifth-place result in a dash lined the team up ninth for the 25-lap main event.

“We were able to rebound and we had a good night at Knoxville,” Bayston said. “It’s a good feeling knowing how fast we were with that motor, especially knowing we have another one that’s built for tracks like Knoxville. I made a lot more gains in that night than the last few times we’ve been there. I felt a lot more comfortable.”

Bayston gained a trio of positions to tie a career-best finish of sixth during the A Main.

The weekend wrapped up on Sunday at 34 Raceway, where Bayston timed in third quickest overall in qualifying and fastest in his group. A third-place result in a heat race lined the team up 11th in the main event.

“We were third quick, but it puts you in dead man’s land,” Swindell said. “You start fourth in a heat, but don’t have a freebie spot like the two fastest qualifiers. I think (Carson) Macedo and (Aaron) Reutzel were in our group and they were the front two. The track was hard to pass and everybody was struggling to make anything happen. Then we didn’t do enough to get him freed up for the A Main.”

Bayston capped his debut at the track with a 12th-place result in the feature.

The team will return to action next Monday at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa, for the Front Row Challenge before tackling the 58th annual 5-Hour Energy Knoxville Nationals Aug. 8-11 at Knoxville Raceway.

“We feel comfortable going back with almost a brand new motor for Nationals,” Swindell said. “We’ll show up in Oskaloosa and unload how we want for our Knoxville Nationals prelim night to use it as more of a shake down for Nationals.”
