Dominic Scelzi Victorious at Jackson and Charges Forward at Knoxville
Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (July 23, 2018) – Dominic Scelzi highlighted last weekend by earning his third feature victory of the season and his first career at Jackson Motorplex on Friday.
The busy weekend began on Thursday at Bloomfield Speedway in Bloomfield, Iowa, where Scelzi piloted a sprint car for Scott Bonar during the Sprint Invaders show. Unfortunately, mechanical problems during the heat race ended the night early for the team.
Scelzi was strong the following night at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn., where he guided his family owned, Roth Motorsports backed team to a clean sweep by winning a heat race from fifth, the dash from second and the A Main from the pole. In fact, Scelzi led every official lap he was on the track during an event that featured 47 racers.
“The heat win gave us a good amount of points and the dash victory put us in a great spot to start on the pole for the main event,” he said. “I was worried about starting on the bottom because it was slick off turn four. We got a good start and into the lead right away before we got into traffic about 10 laps in. I struggled in dirty air. Thomas Kennedy got by me and I was able to get back by him before a yellow came out. With five laps to go me and Kennedy started racing back and forth. He slid me and slowed us both up. Lee Grosz got by both of us, but a yellow came out and saved us again. We had a restart and led until the last lap when a red came out so we did a green-white-checkered finish. Kennedy slid us going into turn one and we battled back and forth to the checkered flag. It was quite a wild race. It was pretty nerve-wracking to be honest. The cushion was pretty technical, but it was slick off it. That was a big win for our team.”

Scelzi took the momentum from the victory into double duty action on Saturday at Knoxville Raceway, where he competed against 32 other drivers in the 410ci winged sprint car class and versus 35 other competitors in the 360ci winged sprint car division.
“We brought out a new car for the 410,” he said. “We battled the race car in qualifying and we weren’t very good in the heat, but we had a rocket in the feature after making some changes.”
Scelzi qualified 14th quickest and dropped from third to fifth in a heat race to start the A Main on the outside of the eighth row. However, he rallied throughout the 20-lap race to garner a sixth-place result. Here is a link to watch the race: https://youtu.be/SNAItzAWRpU.
“Something came through the dash before a late red flag and it busted up my hand pretty good,” he said. “I thought I had a shot of getting to fourth, but at that point we were hanging on. The race track was very technical all night. To pass the quality of cars we did was a boost of confidence.”
Scelzi was just as successful throughout 360 competition, qualifying 12th quickest, advancing from fourth to third in a heat race and maneuvering from 13th to seventh in the main event.
“We struggled in qualifying,” he said. “We didn’t have the speed we needed, but the car was really good. I felt like we gained speed throughout the night. We didn’t make too many changes on the race car. I would have loved to see how we could do if we started eighth versus 13th. We were getting better every single lap and our fastest lap was the last lap. That gives us confidence moving forward.”
