Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (July 22, 2018) – Brian Brown came out on top of an action-packed night on Saturday at Knoxville Raceway, where he recorded his eighth triumph of the season.
Brown set quick time during qualifying before he maneuvered from sixth to third place in a heat race.
“We went out and had quick time, which that was good,” he said. “That will hopefully pay dividends the next couple of weeks (during the Knoxville Nationals) because qualifying is so crucial. In the heat race we tried some things with the car and I tried to change my line to make some laps on the bottom. It’s all about practice. You have to hit all spots of the track when you need to do it.”
Brown lined up on the inside of the second row for the 20-lap main event.
“In the feature we felt like we were going to have a good shot,” he said. “With Austin (McCarl) and Terry (McCarl) on the front row and me and Kerry (Madsen) on the second row it was tough. We got a good start and to the lead on the first lap. I got into the cushion in turn two and almost crashed a few laps in. It knocked my radiator scoop back and the radiator into the oil pump. It changed the handling quite a bit. We got settled back down and then I ran over the back of a car lapping him. Austin got by. Then we had a whale of a battle going back and forth between our two Casey’s cars, which is awesome. I was able to keep him in striking distance and we slid each other three or four times.”
The duo officially swapped the lead five times with Brown making the race-winning move in turn four following a restart with four laps remaining.
“I got a good restart and was able to get by him,” he said. “We made it around to the back stretch when they had another red. We ran three good laps after that to get the win.”
The victory was Brown’s seventh of the season and 44th career in the 410ci winged sprint car division at Knoxville Raceway, giving him sole possession of sixth in career triumphs. The positive moment was even more impactful because of what the team has been enduring.
“I met Chad Morgan 10 years ago and he’s become one of my best friends and a crew chief,” Brown said. “I consider him a brother. His family is my family. He lost his brother on Friday and our thoughts and prayers are with his whole family. We went out there and did the best we could to try to get a win for his brother, CW. It shows you Chad’s dedication to me and our race team by being there after his loss on Friday.”
Brown will join the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions for races this Friday at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn.; Saturday at Knoxville Raceway; and Sunday at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa.
