Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (July 17, 2018) – Mason Daniel recently added another new track to the ever-growing list of first-time venues he has competed at this season.
The Californian made the trip to Sioux Speedway in Sioux Center, Iowa, last Thursday to compete with the Midwest Sprint Touring Series.
Daniel advanced from sixth to third place in heat race competition at the half-mile oval. In the 20-lap main event, he started third and was battling for second in the early going. Daniel ended up crossing the finish line fifth after losing a spot on a restart with just two laps remaining.
“We were able to rely on past experience and having been at some tracks that were similar to there,” he said. “It wasn’t as big as (Missouri State Fair Speedway), but it was a big track. I had a shot at getting to third in lapped traffic, but that door closed pretty fast. We had a yellow and I just made a mistake by leaving the door open on the bottom and was passed for fourth. It’s just another one of those learning experience that we’ll chalk up and move on from.”
Daniel capped the weekend last Saturday night at Knoxville Raceway. The 18-year-old was second fastest in time trials against a stout 31-car field, which included two-time and defending Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour presented by SawBlade.com champion Sam Hafertepe Jr. along with fellow touring driver Travis Rilat and the always strong contingent of Knoxville regulars. In the second heat race, Daniel worked his way from sixth to second place.
“We were really good early in the night,” he noted. “We were just two hundredths of a second from setting quick time. The Moyle Racing Engine and KPC Chassis was running great as we showed by passing a bunch of cars in the heat race.”
Daniel lined up on the outside of the third row and he ended up finishing eighth in the 18-lap main event, which was his fifth straight top-10 finish at Knoxville Raceway.
“I got to third on the start and misjudged how our car was on entry in turns three and four on the first lap,” he shared. “I thought it was tighter and it was actually looser than I expected. I had to regroup and figure out how to run the car. We had a couple of cautions and I didn’t get good starts on either one of those. I made some mistakes going into turn one and have to learn from that and hopefully next time we get a caution late in the race like that I can protect a little better and maintain my position.”
A trio of races await Daniel this week beginning on Thursday at Bloomfield Speedway in Bloomfield, Iowa, with the Sprint Invaders. He’ll visit U.S. 36 Raceway in Osborn, Mo., on Friday with the ASCS Warrior Region before wrapping up the weekend on Saturday at Knoxville Raceway.
