Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (May 22, 2018) – Mason Daniel made his debut at the famed Knoxville Raceway last Saturday and it was an eye-opening experience.
“The only time I’d been to Knoxville was in 2015 for the Knoxville Nationals when we watched,” he said. “Saturday morning Danny (Lasoski) said Lake Ozark Speedway’s race is going to rain out so we’re going to Knoxville. It was spur of the moment so I didn’t have much time to think about it.
“It was a lot different than anything I’ve been on. They run a great show. It’s a lot different driving. You have to keep your hands straight. Knoxville teaches you how to keep your momentum up. A mistake there costs you so much. If I can be good there I can translate that to other tracks.”
Daniel qualified 16th quickest on the half-mile oval before he finished second during a heat race.
“We were off the pace in hot laps, but those were my first laps at Knoxville,” he said. “I was moving my hands too much. We were better in qualifying.
“We led the first three or four laps in the heat. I was on the top. I made a mistake and lost the air on my nose. That’s a big learning thing for me. Air is such a big thing. When someone takes your air the car pushes tight. We finished second so that was good.”
Daniel started the A Main on the inside of the seventh row.
“On the start being midpack you have no air on your car,” he said. “Air is such a huge deal when you’re starting that far back. I’ve never felt that before to that effect. I was trying to be smooth and not my move hands. We were logging laps. I wanted to get used to it for the next time we go back.”
Daniel advanced a position to finish 12th.
He is scheduled to compete this Friday and Saturday at Lake Ozark Speedway in Eldon, Mo., with the ASCS Warrior Region and Sunday at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, with the Sprint Invaders.
