Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 16, 2017) – Josh Baughman finished one spot shy of tying a career-best mark at the Knoxville Nationals last weekend when Knoxville Raceway hosted the 57th annual 5-Hour Energy Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Store.

“I felt like we made some progress during the Knoxville Nationals compared to the last two years so that was a positive,” he said. “We didn’t get the results we strived for overall, but we had some good moments that we can build on.”

Baughman kicked off the marquee event on Thursday when he timed in 40th quickest during qualifying. He then won a heat race from the pole position, which marked his first career Knoxville Nationals heat win. That lined him up on the outside of the 10th row for the main event.

“We got better every time we hit the track,” he said. “I felt pretty good in the A Main and we were able to move forward quite a bit.”

Baughman maneuvered from 20th to a 12th-place result.

He returned to the half-mile oval on Friday for Hard Knox Night, when he qualified 16th quickest in his group, placed fifth in a heat race and ended seventh in a B Main.

“We made progress throughout the night and we just missed transferring into the A Main through both the heat race and B Main,” he said. “When you don’t make the main event on that night it really buries you for Saturday.”

Baughman lined up 17th in the C Main on Saturday during the finale and he finished where he started.

“The track was still fast at that point in the night and there were a lot of good drivers in the C Main,” he said. “It was a long shot to drive from that far back into a transfer so we tried something with the car so we could learn.”
