Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 15, 2017) – Kerry Madsen earned his third podium finish in the last four years during sprint car racing’s premier event last weekend at Knoxville Raceway, which hosted the 57th annual 5-Hour Energy Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Store.

The Big Game Motorsports driver opened the action on Wednesday when he set quick time during qualifying on his preliminary night. He then charged from eighth to second place to lock the Muddy sponsored team into the eighth starting position in the A Main.

“If you can get a good (qualifying) time and transfer through your heat that sets up the whole week,” he said. “We got a great start in the heat and into a transfer position. We had a good car and got to second.”

Madsen made quick work to advance into the top five of the main event and he maneuvered into a battle for third place before a parts problem relegated him to a sixth-place result.

“We were going pretty good and up to fourth,” he said. “We had a little issue with something starting to go wrong with the car, but we got good points out of the night so it was a job well done.”

Madsen ranked fourth out of more than 100 drivers once preliminary night points were calculated. That lined him up fourth for the 50-lap main event on Saturday, marking the fourth straight season he has started in the first two rows of the feature.

“We got a good start and settled into a rhythm,” he said. “We were catching those guys in front. We were about to pass (Donny) Schatz and the yellow came out. I felt like we were a little better than them in traffic. We had a green flag run and then it was the halfway point.”

Madsen was running second at the mandatory caution midway through the race and he went for the lead on the restart.

“I went to try a slider on Schatz, but he drove around it,” he said. “I thought I had it. He manned up and drove around it. That cost me second. Then we needed traffic and never got into heavy traffic.”

Madsen fell to third after attempting to take the lead and he ran there for the remainder of the race.

“Realistically it went really well, but it was ok,” he said. “We contended for the win and that’s all you can ask for. I’m satisfied we had a great run, but disappointed for me personally to not get the job done. It’s the best car we’ve had there all year. However, I’ve been on the other side where you’re sitting in the D Main.”

Big Game Motorsports is scheduled to compete this Friday at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, N.D., and Saturday at Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo, N.D., with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.
