Scelzi Captures Sprint Invaders Win in Iowa for First Career Triumph Outside Home State

Inside Line Promotions – DUBUQUE, Iowa (July 26, 2017) – Dominic Scelzi recorded his first career feature victory outside of his home state of California on Tuesday evening when he made his debut at Dubuque Fairgrounds Speedway.

Scelzi and his family owned, Roth Motorsports backed team kicked off the Sprint Invaders event by charging from sixth to second place during a heat race. That earned a spot in the dash, in which Scelzi advanced from third to second place. The feature redraw lined him up on the outside of the second row for the 25-lap main event.

“I ripped the top and was able to get into second down the backstretch and I slid the leader in turn three, but the yellow flag came out,” he said. “The top two crashed so that lined me up on the outside of the front row on the restart. Terry (McCarl) got the jump and I followed him around. I started working the bottom in turns one and two. I was able to get by him and then we started sliding each other for the lead. We changed the lead five or six times throughout the race. With about 10 laps to go I was able to clear him and maintain the lead. We got through traffic really well and were able to get the win.

“It was huge to be able to win outside of California. The biggest thing about it is we’re racing with guys like Terry McCarl and Bill Balog. Being able to race that hard with a veteran like Terry and beat him was huge for us.”

The victory highlighted a busy last week for the team, which transitioned to 360ci winged sprint car competition last Saturday at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa. Unfortunately, mechanical gremlins plagued the team throughout the night and Scelzi was unable to finish a heat race or start the B Main.

The team fixed the problem prior to Sunday’s ASCS Warrior Region event at Double X Speedway in California, Mo., where Scelzi advanced from fifth to fourth place in a heat race to line up ninth in the A Main.

“Cars started crashing before I got to the flag stand when we started the feature,” he said. “I got hit by a flipping car. It broke the stud off the right rear shock. We restarted at the back and went from 22nd to eighth in 15 laps, basically just trying to stay out of trouble. We had a restart on Lap 15. I slid someone for sixth or seventh and we made contact in turn one. I spun around and at that point I decided park it.”

Scelzi was credited with a 16th-place result.

The busy scheduled resumes this weekend when Scelzi will compete on Friday at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn.; on Saturday at Knoxville Raceway in both the 410 and 360 classes; and on Sunday at Mason City Motor Speedway in Mason City, Iowa, with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT – Scelzi Enterprises

In 1979, brothers Mike, James and Gary Scelzi began manufacturing their line of flatbeds out of their company’s 4,500-square-foot facility in Fresno, Calif. They added truck service bodies and crane bodies to their line in 1990. Today, Scelzi Enterprises is the Valley’s largest manufacturer and supplier of truck bodies and parts. The operation includes 16 acres with more than 200,000 square feet of manufacturing facilities in Fresno alone. Scelzi Enterprises creates custom truck bodies for a wide range of customers, from single vehicles for individuals to entire fleets for some of California’s largest companies and utilities. “Scelzi Enterprises has been around long before my brother and I,” Scelzi said. “My dad and uncles have been involved in racing for years. They owned a sand dragster when my dad was young and started racing, and my uncle owned a very famous hard top years ago with many famous California drivers behind the wheel, including the one and only Al Pombo.”

Scelzi would also like to thank Whipple Superchargers, Panella Trucking, Carlucci Transport, Fuel Delivery Services, Inc., Red Rose Transportation, Inc., Roth Motorsports, Red Line Oil, NAPA Auto Parts, Todd Jorgensen, Weld Wheels, Schoenfeld Headers, FK Rod Ends, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, Sparco, Simpson Race Products, Worldwide Bearings, Blast Tech, K&N Filters, ButlerBuilt Professional Seat Systems, Meridian Steel, Kenny’s Components, Lincoln Auto Auction, Auto Meter, Allstar Performance, DJS Safe Seats, Arctic Cat and Southern Pacific Farms for their continued support.
