Jason Martin

Heartland Park, Topeka, KS & Knoxville Raceway, Knoxville, IA

Jason Martin and the BM Motorsports team raced Friday night, June 23, 2017, at Heartland Park in Topeka, KS. Martin started 8th in the heat race and finished 3rd. In the feature, Martin started 7th to DNF as the rocker arm in the engine broke.
“I felt like we had a very good car all night, just as we have all season, but unfortunately we had a part failure that we can’t predict or plan for,” Martin stated. “We started 7th and was up to the top 5 pretty quick. Just as we were getting in to lap traffic, we had a yellow that spread the field back out and I felt like we were good enough to capitalize on the traffic and use them to our advantage, but we dropped a cylinder and I parked it for the night to prevent further damage.”
Fortunately, the team was able to find another set of rocker arms to borrow for the next night in Knoxville, IA.
Martin qualified 20th and started 7th in heat and finished 6th. “We just missed the setup and gearing by a long ways there early in the night,” Martin stated. “It’s been so long since I’ve been there and what we’ve done in the past didn’t seem to work in today’s world. Hot laps were a sloppy mess, so we didn’t get any good laps and then they send you right out for qualifying, so we didn’t change anything and that hurt us bad! We came in and changed some torsion bars, shocks, and gearing and we were better in the heat race, raced right with a couple of the top locals, but I knew we needed to be better. So we came in and threw out the note book and made some wholesale changes stagger and shock wise, and then she finally came alive.”
#36 started 18th in the short 20 lap feature and drove up to 8th place. “I had made a commitment to myself that I was going over there and was going to learn to run the bottom of the track,” Martin stated. “I don’t think I made more than two or three corners on the top all night. I learned a lot as a driver and also about how we need to tune the race car more for next time. I’m excited about going back there again this next week. We should have a little better baseline to start from and that will help us earlier in the night.”
