John Carney II Races Into His First Knoxville 360 Nationals A-Feature
EL PASO, Texas (August 11, 2016) While the outcome of the qualifying night was not what John Carney II had in mind, the final outcome of the weekend was worthwhile as Carney raced his way into his first championship A-Feature at the 26th annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals presented by Great Southern Bank.
Making his qualifying bid on Friday, August 5, Carney wheel the Lubbock Wrecker Service/Mesilla Valley Transportation No. 11x to fourth on the speed-charts in Qualifying with a time of 16.208 seconds.
“That’s the best I’ve every qualifying there, and that’s important, because the biggest thing about Knoxville is being towards the front of the pack,” said Carney.
Through the invert, Carney found himself starting sixth in the fourth Heat Race.
“The first two starts I got to third, but they both got called back and the third one, it was all cars on the inside of me that were outside the invert and slow on time, so on the last restart, I got hung up behind them. I did make it to fourth, but I missed my marks and Zomer got me so I finished fifth which put me at the front of the B-Main.”
Finishing third in the B-Feature to transfer, Carney’s A-Feature was stopped short as the second restart saw the No. 11x slowing down the back straightaway after contact with the wall off the exit of the second turn.
“In the ‘B’ in clean air, the car was on rails. We made a few adjustments for the A-Main, but lack of patience got me in trouble and I tagged the wall. When I did, I knocked the rear end out of the car but fortunately, timing good saved us and put us in the front of the B-Main on Saturday.”
Returning Saturday with a fourth place starting spot in the B-Feature, Carney advanced; starting 23rd in the lineup, eventually coming up to a 19th place run despite the damage to the car from the night before.
“Overall, we were pleased. It was the second weekend on the car, first on the engine, and being my fist time to Knoxville all year. All things considered, we really did run well with all the guys that were fast, and outran a lot of fast cars too.”
Taking the weekend off to rebuild and regroup, the No. 11x will be back in action with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network on Saturday, August 20 at the St. Francois County Raceway in Farmington, Mo. followed by the $15,000 to win High Roller Classic at the Missouri State Fair Speedway in Sedalia, Mo on Sunday, August 21.
Special thanks from the team goes out to Royal Jones and Mesilla Valley Transportation for their support of their racing endeavors.
