Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 10, 2016) – Josh Baughman set himself up to challenge for the title at the 26th annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals last weekend.

Baughman kicked off the marquee event at Knoxville Raceway on Thursday by qualifying eighth quickest before he maneuvered from fifth to second place in a heat race. That lined him up on the inside of the third row for the main event.

“We had a good car that was capable of winning,” he said. “Sammy (Swindell) got by us there in the middle of the race so we ended third.”

Baughman charged into the runner-up position early in the main event before he settled for a third-place result, which was his 11th top five of the season. That also ranked him fifth in overall points out of nearly 100 competitors following the two preliminary nights. However, he moved up a spot when a fellow driver elected not to compete on Saturday.

“We started Saturday’s main event fourth and that’s exactly what you try to set yourself up to do,” he said. “We wanted to give ourselves a shot to win after the preliminary night and we did.”

Baughman battled for a podium position through the first few laps of the race before a mechanical problem derailed the team. He was credited with a 24th-place result.

“We definitely had a top-five car and were racing with the best of them so that’s a confidence booster,” he said. “It was an unfortunate ending to the weekend, but we had great speed every time we were on the track.”

Baughman also competed at the half-mile oval on Sunday during the Capitani Classic. He timed in 16th quickest in his group before finishing seventh in a heat race and fifth in a B Main to miss a transfer by only two positions.

It was the final test before the 56th annual 5-Hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals this Wednesday through Saturday at Knoxville Raceway.
