Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 11, 2015) – Kevin Swindell put together a solid outing during the 25th annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals last weekend.
Swindell and car owner Bernie Stuebgen kicked off the event at Knoxville Raceway last Friday by drawing the highest number, which sent them out to qualify last around the half-mile oval.
“Qualifying is key whenever you race at the Knoxville Nationals and the track really slows down throughout qualifying so if you draw a high number you’re already behind,” Swindell said. “We made the best out of the situation.”
Swindell timed in 19th quickest to make the heat race inversion. He then advanced from third to second place during a heat race, which lined him up on the inside of the sixth row for the main event.
“We worked our way up through there car by car on the bottom mostly,” he said. “I was able to advance into the top five, which earned us enough points to lock into Saturday’s main event.”
Swindell’s fifth-place result placed him 15th in overall preliminary points out of more than 100 competitors. That lined him up on the inside of the eighth row for Saturday’s $10,000-to-win feature.
“It rained a lot that morning so the track was pretty heavy and one lane,” he said. “We got what we could, but passing was at a premium. Track position was definitely important.”
Swindell rallied from 15th to record a ninth-place result.
The weekend wrapped up on Sunday at the half-mile oval for the 4th annual Capitani Classic. Swindell qualified 32nd quickest, placed 10th in a heat race and ended sixth in the C Main.
The team will return to Knoxville Raceway this Wednesday through Saturday for the 55th annual FVP Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Store. Swindell made the $150,000-to-win feature in 2013 when he finished 20th.
