Henderson Wins Third of Season, Landis Wins 360 Thriller at Knoxville!

Justin Henderson struck for his third win of the season and ninth of his career Saturday night at the Knoxville Raceway. The Sioux Falls, South Dakota driver’s win came aboard the BDS Motorsports #1. The 360 main event was a tune-up for next week’s 25th Arnold Motor Supply 360 Nationals presented by Great Southern Bank. The feature saw five lead changes, and Calvin Landis picked up his first career 360 win, and his first at Knoxville since winning in the 410 class in 2007.

Before a lap could be completed in the 20-lap main event, Logan Forler did a series of flips in turn one. He was uninjured. The second try saw Henderson take the early lead from pole-sitter Terry McCarl and Dusty Zomer. Henderson set sail on the bottom groove.

Danny Lasoski, who started fifth, grabbed the fourth spot from Lynton Jeffrey on lap two. It took several laps to get to lapped traffic, and McCarl reeled in Henderson on one occasion. Scott Bogucki hit the turn three berm and flipped with thirteen laps recorded.

The restart opened up the track again for the leaders, and Henderson cruised ahead of McCarl, Zomer and Lasoski. Brian Brown used the restart to shoot from seventh to fifth. Henderson did escape disaster late with a slowing Austin Johnson who got over the inside berm in turn four.

Henderson maintained his advantage to the stripe, ahead of McCarl, Zomer, Lasoski and Brown. Davey Heskin, Jeffrey, hard-charger Brooke Tatnell, Jamie Veal and Bronson Maeschen rounded out the top ten. Madsen set quick time, while Tasker Phillips, Lasoski and Tim Kaeding won heat races. Madsen also won the B main.

“(Austin Johnson) did a good job of saving it there,” said Henderson of his late scare. “I’ve done the same thing. It’s definitely possible to do that when you are trying your best to go fast. This was a really good night for this BDS Motorsports team. The track was really fast. Starting position helped an awful lot. Pretty much every scenario you can imagine has played out this year. We’ve got a lot of good practice and a lot of good testing this year. We’re saving it in that bank of knowledge for the Nationals these next two weeks.”

The race of the night, and quite possibly the season to date came in the 18-lap 360 feature. Calvin Landis came from the second row to take the early lead ahead of Josh Baughman and Tony Bruce Jr. For the first seven laps, Landis rode the cushion, while Baughman stayed within two car lengths on the bottom.

On lap nine, Bruce shot by Baughman for second in a three-way battle for the lead. On the next circuit, Baughman bounced back. He stormed past Bruce and Landis to regain the lead. The leaders were in heavy lapped traffic on lap 14, when it was Bruce’s turn to take the point on the low side over Baughman.

Baughman returned the favor again on the next circuit, while Wayne Johnson came out of nowhere to claim third from Landis. On lap 16, Johnson shot by both Bruce and Baughman who shot over the turn one berm to avoid contact. Johnson took off and looked to be heading to the win!

Disaster struck him, however, in turn three on the last lap, when his left rear tire exploded. Landis and Baughman drag raced for the checkers, banging wheels down the front straight. Landis won by a margin of .065 of a second. Bruce was third, ahead of Justin Henderson and hard-charger Johnny Herrera. Jon Agan, Clint Garner, Johnson (limping home), Nate Van Haaften and Ryan Giles rounded out the top ten.

Henderson set quick time on the night over the 39-car field, while Jamie Ball, Johnson, Garner and Herrera won heat races. John Hall won the B main.

“You don’t get many chances in this world at my age to win a race,” said Landis in Victory Lane beside the Vander Ecken Motor$port$ #10. “When you get an opportunity, you’re going to crash or win that $%&*@! It’s been a long time coming. It’s been a lot of hard roads. This is a real small operation. About six laps in, the car started puking oil or something all over me. I was watching the gauges to see what was ready to go. While I was watching the gauges, I just got a little bit behind. With about three to go, I said, ‘She’s going to hold on, let’s go, pucker down and go!’ I kept pulling tear-off after tear-off down the front straightaway.”

The 25th Annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Nationals presented by Great Southern Bank kick off this Thursday night, August 6, and continue Friday, August 7 and Saturday, August 8!
