Brian Brown – Things Heat Up with Five Race Week!

Brian Brown and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team are gearing up for a busy five-race week. They are hoping being awarded a win at the Knoxville Raceway last Saturday night is a sign that things are headed in the right direction for the “Month of Money” ahead. FVP National Sprint League “Fair Speedweek” kicks off Tuesday night at the Hancock Speedway near Britt, Iowa, before moving onto the Iowa State Fair Speedway in Des Moines on Wednesday, and the Jackson Speedway in Minnesota on Thursday. After competing again in weekly action at Knoxville on Saturday, the NSL finishes up the weekend at Huset’s Speedway near Brandon, South Dakota on Sunday.

You came out 24th out of 30 cars Saturday and qualified fourth quick.

To come out as last as we did, and lay down a good time like that is always good. The track was pretty technical in that we had to hit the bottom, and the car had to work down there. We were able to make a couple of good laps.

You started fifth in the heat, but it seemed tough out there.

We had high hopes for the heat race. For whatever reason, we didn’t move up like we had hoped. We had a decent start, but the driver put the car in a couple of bad spots. It was unfortunate, but at that point, it didn’t mean a whole heck of a lot (he finished sixth).

You started fourth in the feature, and it didn’t take you long to get to the front.

It was fun to be back up front. Danny’s (Lasoski) been the fastest car there this year, and it was good to finally be able to race with him. We were able to get the lead and just cruise there as long as we could…until we got to traffic.

That’s when things got interesting.

I got into the infield berm in turn three pretty good one lap. At the time, I really didn’t know what was going on, but I normally spoke my wheel straight up at 12 o’clock. As soon as I did that, my spoke went to three o’clock. I’m not making excuses, but I spent some time darting around trying to figure out what was going on. At that point, I thought my steering was bad.

It was a great race with a three-way battle for the lead at the checkers. You ended up inheriting your 30th win at Knoxville.

We ended up trying to salvage something and got passed at the end. We finished second. It was unfortunate that Tim (Kaeding) was DQed. I’m not sure how much that muffler helped him. Theirs was altered. Whether that made a difference or not, who knows? He took the checkered first, but post-race inspection said something different. The way our luck’s going, maybe that’s what we needed. It’s not how we want to win, but when you go to the bank, they don’t ask how you got it, they just ask how much you’re depositing.

What did you do to fix the car between features.

As soon as I came in after the first feature, I told Chad (Morgan) to change the steering, because I knew something was going haywire. There wasn’t a lot of time to diagnose the problem. Chad and Josh (Hembe) did a great job of getting it changed. Just as we finished that, we noticed the left front radius rod was bent. Really, we probably changed that steering gear for no reason.

You started charging forward, but came to a stop.

We were in a hurry, and for one reason or another, one of the (power steering) lines was left lose. We had a really good start and got up to seventh, eighth or ninth. Then I went down there and all the power steering fluid blew out of it. It was one of those deals that happen. It was unfortunate, but overall, it was a really good night.

This is a good week to have some more good nights!

It’s a big week. The arm’s feeling good. Confidence is getting back where it needs to be, and the guys are working hard. We’ve never been to Britt, and we haven’t been to Des Moines since the early 2000’s. It’s back to Jackson, back to Knoxville and back up to Huset’s. Tis the season! There are sleepless nights, but this is what we live for. We need to make sure we’re prepared.
