Dover Wins Hutchinson Grand Nationals For Second Straight Season
Inside Line Promotions – HUTCHINSON, Kan. (July 30, 2014) – Jack Dover capped his weekend with a wild flip following his second straight Hutchinson Grand Nationals triumph.
“The track was so rough I think it broke some bolts in the front end,” he said. “After taking the checkered flag I went into turn one and the right front bolt in the steering arm broke. I hit the brakes so hard the pedal was wedged into the frame. I hit the wall and it flipped once and landed upright.”
Although Dover ended with a damaged frame and a variety of bent or broken parts, his weekend had been stellar up to that point.
Dover charged from fourth to win his heat race with the Nebraska 360 Sprints at Crawford County Speedway in Denison, Iowa, last Thursday. That gave him the most points of any driver and a trip to the feature redraw, where he pulled the second-highest number – seven – to start the main event on the inside of the fourth row.
“I got up to second about five laps in and then the track started taking rubber around halfway,” he said. “It was around the bottom. We got on the leader’s bumper one time, but there was no way I could pass.”
Dover settled for the runner-up result.
The team ventured to the Kansas State Fairgrounds on Friday to kick off the 58th annual Hutchinson Grand Nationals doubleheader.
Unfortunately, Dover was unable to finish his heat race after a bolt broke in the birdcage on the last lap. That started him last in the 12-lap main event.
“I pretty much just picked them off one by one,” he said. “About halfway it started taking rubber and it was pretty much get in line. I knew I had to do something so I was going above the guys and carrying my speed further into the corners.”
Dover maneuvered from 15th to earn a fifth-place finish, which lined him up on the inside of the third row for Saturday’s $3,000-to-win NCRA feature.
“At the beginning we were hanging out in fourth,” he said. “As the race went on my car got a little better. Some yellows helped us out. We had just passed for third and the leader broke. That put us second on the last restart. They had an open red and I tuned on the car a little bit to make it better. I ran the bottom of the track the rest of the race.”
Dover capitalized on the opportunity following the open red just after the midpoint of the race.
“I was running the bottom in turns one and two because I felt a little bit of rubber down there,” he said. “Finally I caught up to the leader enough to beat him off the corner of two.”
Dover took over the top spot with a handful of laps remaining and he cruised to his 11th feature victory of the season.
The team is slated to tackle the 24th annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa this weekend. Dover’s preliminary night is slated for Friday with Saturday’s finale paying $10,000 to win.
Dover will also race on Monday at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa, for the Front Row Challenge with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
