Carson McCarl – Third Win a Charm!

(Bill W) July 25, 2011 – Carson McCarl snatched the third win of the season and his career at the Knoxville Raceway last Saturday night. The sixteen year old pilot of the T-MAC Motorsports #97 is in his rookie season in sprint cars and has been impressing the Knoxville faithful week in and week out.

Uncharacteristically, Carson had a rough time in qualifying, timing in with the tenth best time in the field. “I don’t know what the deal was,” he explains. “We went out early and it was pretty wet and slick. I didn’t hit my marks very well. Luckily, they drew the ten for the invert, or we would have been back a ways to start the feature.”

Starting fifth in the second heat, Carson moved his way up to third. “We got going well there, but we had some trouble getting by one car,” he says. “Once we got by him, we were rolling, but the leaders were too far out front. We needed another lap or two.”
The Altoona, Iowa driver planned on running the cushion in the 12-lap feature. “We aimed for the top to start things,” says Carson. “The car was really working well. Then we had the caution.”

That’s when Carson got a little help from the infield. “You really don’t want to change your line when you are leading, but the bottom in three and four was getting so good,” he says. “I tried it down there and the car stuck.”

There were no serious challenges, and Carson cruised to the checkers. “It’s unbelievable really,” he says. “Going into this year, I really didn’t even expect to win one race. To win three out of six is pretty awesome.”

Carson is thankful for those who make his racing possible. “I need to thank Van Gorp Construction, Gary Dean and Aaron Berryhill for all they do,” he says. “I’d also like to send out ‘Get Well’ wishes to both Aaron and Bob Berryhill too.”

In a special show at Bloomfield Speedway in Bloomfield, Iowa on Friday night, Carson suffered tough luck when he smacked the wall and flattened a tire while running in the top three early on.
