Carson McCarl – Another Good Run at Knoxville!

(Bill W) June 8, 2011 – Carson McCarl is putting some solid runs together at the “Sprint Car Capital of the World”. In his third feature ever there, he would end up fourth last Saturday night. The season continues on a different night this weekend, as the World of Outlaws are in town for two nights and the 305’s will compete on Friday.

For the past two races, the 305 class has begun group qualifying to begin the night. The track is usually slick as time trials occur during hot laps, and they are the first class on the track. Saturday, Carson timed in third quick in the 18-car field. “The track was pretty good, and the team had my car working well,” said Carson. “It was kind of greasy on the bottom, so I tried to keep the car about a car-length off the bottom there.”

The sixteen-year-old driver from Altoona, Iowa likes the change in rules. “I like the qualifying deal a lot better,” says Carson. “Just like my dad, I’m not very good at drawing, so qualifying in groups is the way to go.”

Starting inside row two in his heat, Carson would drive to a runner-up finish after a slow start. “I actually got kind of a bad start and dropped back to fourth,” he says. “I found my line, and ended up getting back up to second behind Jamie (Ball).”

With an invert of six, Carson would start outside row two for the 12-lap main event. “I thought the track was good on the bottom, and I tried to run there for a while,” he says of his run. “The car was just a little loose to run down there. I should have moved to the top a lot sooner than I did.”

Carson was steady, and only one caution slowed things. The result was another top five finish in fourth. “I almost was passed when I changed lines, but the race went pretty smooth overall,” he says. “All in all, we had a good car. Jamie was super-fast, so I don’t think anyone was going to catch him on Saturday.”

Carson is appreciative of all the help he gets at and away from the track. “I need to thank Deanfield Farms, AmericashAdvance.com, Vortex, Hoosier, DeBerg Concrete and all our great partners.”
