Few drivers are as popular with fans, both young and old, than Billy “Tornado” Alley. A football scholarship went by the wayside with injuries for the emotional Nebraska native who teamed at linebacker in high school with current Tampa Bay Buccaneer Barrett Ruud. Fortunately, he turned to sprint cars instead. Billy wears his emotions on his sleeve, and that’s evident whenever he lands in victory lane.
Billy conquered the 2006 410 season at Knoxville as its champion. After a 2007 season with fewer successes, he tackled 2008 and made a second place run in the standings. Racing as a driver/owner, Billy had a rough season in 2009 though he posted several strong rungs.
Billy burst on the sprint scene in 2002, winning the Eagle Raceway (NE) point championship in his first season, and taking National 360 Rookie of the Year honors from the National Hall of Fame and Museum. In 2003, he ran Knoxville for the first time, taking home the 360 track championship, while becoming one of a handful of drivers to sweep both main events on Twin Features Night. Billy still competes in the 360 from time to time, and won the 2004 and 2005 360 Nationals at Knoxville. In 2008, he took the Jackson (MN) Nationals.
In 2004, Billy won the award for National 410 Rookie of the Year, as he moved to the bigger class. He also conquered the New Zealand Grand Prix that season, and was the 2005 New Zealand Gold Cup winner. New Zealand race fan and ACDC drummer Phil Rudd thought enough of Billy to invite him for some deep sea fishing.
